The GE Speedtronic platform has gone through several generations, each building on the last in terms of control capability, redundancy, and diagnostics. The Mark IV brought in digital control for what were previously analogue-heavy systems. The Mark V is still used in a lot of gas and steam turbine plants, around the world. It has something called Triple Modular Redundancy and simplex configurations. These give the people who operate the plants some choices based on how much risk they are willing to take. The Mark VI came next. It had a better way of getting information in and out. It also had something called IONet communication. Then the Mark VIe was. It went even further. The Mark VIe has a way of controlling things from places and it can work with a lot of other systems.

The GE Excitation system controls the field current supplied to a generator's rotor, which in turn controls voltage output. GE's excitation product line has evolved across three main platforms. The EX2000 is a system that many plants still use, especially those, with older GE turbines. It was replaced by the EX2100 which has a design improved fault detection and works better with GE Speedtronic turbine controls. The EX2100e is the current platform, designed for digital control environments and offering enhanced AVR (automatic voltage regulation) performance and communication capability.
